Animation Workflow & Time Frames

An insight into the production process for animated video

Due to the amount of work needed to create an animated video, the process has more steps than traditional video production. There are multiple approval stages which allows us to identify issues early on before the bulk of the work is completed. This is the workflow that is used for most animated videos:

  1. Questionnaire: You (the client) completes a questionnaire. This questionnaire covers virtually every question I will have about your project. It will take you a few minutes to complete, but it will save a ton of time later on in the process.
  2. Phone/Skype call: In order to fully understand your project, we really need to spend time discussing it with you. We will discuss your goals, video uses and more.
  3. Project Briefing: After the phone call, I will ask you to prepare a Project Briefing for the video which you will then send to me. More information about Project Briefings can be found here.
  4. Written Script: I will use information acquired in steps # 1, #2, and #3 to create a rough written script for the video. The script is sent to you for review and changes.
  5. Text Storyboard: The approved written script is broken down to small chucks (usually individual sentences) and text is written described the proposed visual for that part of the script. The text storyboard is sent to you for review and changes.
  6. Sketch Storyboard: The approved text storyboard is then converted to a VERY rough sketch storyboard (stick-figures). This enables you to see how the visual described in the text storyboard will be laid out in the final video. The sketch storyboard is sent to you for review and changes.
  7. Full Storyboard: The approved sketch storyboard is then converted to a full-color, full-detail storyboard. This will be your first look at what the completed video will look like. At this stage the only thing missing is the actual movement of the elements. The full storyboard is sent to you for review and changes.
  8. Final Video: The fully-animated video is uploaded to YouTube (unlisted) for your review.
  9. Changes: We will make changes to the video as requested and the revised video will again be placed on YouTube (unlisted) for your review. If the changes meet with your approval, nothing further will be done.
  10. Delivery: The video file will be delivered via an upload/download site such as Dropbox or WeTransfer after full payment or release of escrow has occurred.

TIME FRAMES

It’s difficult to quote an exact time frame for creating an animated video because it’s largely dependent on how long the review periods take. However, the process usually takes approximately 3-4 weeks from start to finish. Here are some general time frames for the steps that we do (times based on a 2-minute video):

  • Steps #1-4: Five (5) working days
  • Step #5: Three (3) working days
  • Step #6: Five (5) working days
  • Step #7: Seven (7) working days
  • Step #8: Two (2) working days

Again, these are general time frames and may change slightly based on the nature of your video. Longer videos will take longer to produce.
